Fishing Frontier is a fishing datapack from hokage3211 that reworks the fishing loot table system with a progression system, custom enchantments and a large set of new catches. It also ships as a mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and as a plain datapack. It is required on the server and optional for players who join.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.2. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What changes at the waterline

  • Progression. Fish up pieces of the Fisherman's Set to climb through tiers, and each tier unlocks its own edible, customized catches.
  • Live Catch. Hook live creatures that carry goodies. It cannot be combined with Treasure Hunter.
  • Treasure Hunter. Fish up loot crates, with rare structures offering crates that hold armor trims. It cannot be combined with Live Catch.
  • Lets you fish in lava. The Nether is the main place for it, though the overworld has some lava loot.
  • Chumming and rods. Fish food shifts what you catch, and rare rods can carry Lure up to level 5. Combining one with another rod that has Lure clamps the result to level 3.
  • Biome and location loot, plus one hidden enchantment for the most dedicated fishers.

Advancements walk you through the system. An info book is handed to you with your first boots and can also be crafted, and an encyclopedia at its end covers the details.

Installation

For the mod route, set up the loader that matches your install (see the guides for Fabric or Forge and NeoForge), then place the mod file in the mods folder, as covered in installing Java mods. The newest release needs no other mods. If you prefer no loader, use the plain datapack in your world instead.

The creator says the logic only runs while someone is fishing, so tick lag should not be a concern.

The trade-off is choice. Live Catch and Treasure Hunter exclude each other, so each rod commits to one style, and the whole system only works where the server has it.

Questions about Fishing Frontier.

5 questions

Is Fishing Frontier a datapack or a mod?

Both. Fishing Frontier is published as a plain datapack and as a mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. Pick the plain datapack if you do not use a mod loader, or the loader file if you already run mods. Neither needs extra dependencies.

Do players need Fishing Frontier installed on their side?

No. It is required on the server and optional for players who join.

Why do my lava-fished items burn instantly on Paper?

Paper's fix-entity-position-desync option interferes with a vanilla selector the pack depends on.

Can I use Live Catch and Treasure Hunter together?

No. The two enchantments are not compatible with each other, so a rod carries one or the other.

Does Fishing Frontier cause lag?

The creator says it should not affect tick performance, because logic only runs while fishing is happening and is limited to what is needed.
