Inventory Sorter is an inventory sorter mod for NeoForge and Forge, written by cpw. It adds two small controls: a middle click that sorts a container, and scroll-wheel transfers that move one item at a time. It must be installed on both the client and the server.

Loaders and versions

  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.4 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.14.4 to 1.20.1. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What it does

  • Middle mouse sorting orders an inventory from the highest stack count to the lowest. When counts match, items are grouped by registry name, so similar items sit together.
  • Scroll wheel transfer moves a single item from one inventory to another, in or out, with each notch.
  • Sorting works on all containers, and probably too many. It avoids slots marked as non-extractable or invalid for the item.

The client does no sorting itself. All the work is delegated to the server, which keeps the result fast and consistent. The cost is that a server without the mod will not sort for players who have it.

Installation

Install the matching loader first, using the guide to Forge and NeoForge. Then put the mod file in the mods folder on the client and on the server, as covered in installing mods on Java Edition. The newest builds need no other mods.

Blacklisting containers

Some containers should not be sorted, typically where a special slot holds an item that is not marked read only, which could allow duplication. The /inventorysorter command, added in 1.13, works on the last container you middle-click sorted, or tried to sort.

  • bladd adds that container to the blacklist.
  • blremove removes it from the blacklist.
  • show names the last container sorted.
  • list shows every blacklisted container.

Searching for this mod may also turn up Inventory Sorting, which is a separate listing with a similar name.

Questions about Inventory Sorter.

4 questions

Does Inventory Sorter need to be installed on the server?

Yes. It has to be installed on both the client and the server. The client does not sort anything itself and hands all the work to the server, so a server without the mod will not respond to the middle click.

How do I sort a chest with Inventory Sorter?

Open the container and click the middle mouse button. The contents are sorted from the highest stack count to the lowest, and items with equal counts are grouped by registry name. The scroll wheel moves single items between inventories.

Does Inventory Sorter work with Fabric?

Inventory Sorter supports NeoForge and Forge only, and no Fabric file is listed. A Java mod runs only with the loader it was made for, so a Fabric profile will not load it. Check the loader list on the page before installing.

What is the Inventory Sorter blacklist command?

The /inventorysorter command manages containers that should not be middle-click sorted. Use bladd to blacklist the last container you sorted, blremove to undo it, show to see it, and list to view all blacklisted containers.
