Nether Depths Upgrade is a small Java mod for Fabric and NeoForge that gives the Nether's lava seas their own flora and fauna. It adds nine fish, an enchantment and a potion, all aimed at exploring lava. Install it on both sides, meaning on each player's setup and on the host of a multiplayer world.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.19 to 1.21.1. The newest build requires Geckolib.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21 to 1.21.1. The newest build requires Geckolib.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.16.5 to 1.20.1, builds stopped after May 2024. The newest build requires Geckolib; builds for 1.16.5 to 1.18.2 need no dependencies.

What it adds

The lava sea stops being an empty hazard.

  • Nine new fish living in the Nether's lava seas.
  • A new enchantment made for exploring lava.
  • A new potion for the same purpose.

Installing it

The mod needs the loader that matches its file, plus a library. If you have not set up a loader yet, the guides for Fabric and Forge and NeoForge cover it.

  1. 1.Install Fabric or NeoForge for a supported release.
  2. 2.Place GeckoLib in the mods folder. The newest files for every loader depend on it.
  3. 3.Place the Nether Depths Upgrade file in the same folder.
  4. 4.Repeat on the host of any multiplayer world, then launch with the loader's profile.

Trade-offs

This is a small mod focused on the lava seas, not a Nether overhaul, so it pairs with other content rather than replacing it. Both sides must carry the mod and its library, so a friend joining without them will not connect.

Questions about Nether Depths Upgrade.

4 questions

How do I install Nether Depths Upgrade?

Install Fabric or NeoForge for a supported release, then put GeckoLib and the Nether Depths Upgrade file in the mods folder and launch with that loader's profile. Do the same on the host of a multiplayer world, since the mod is needed on both sides.

Does Nether Depths Upgrade work on Forge?

Older Forge files exist, but Forge builds stopped in May 2024. Current development continues on Fabric and NeoForge, so those are the loaders to pick if you want the newest files and any later fixes.

Does Nether Depths Upgrade need other mods?

Yes. The newest files for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge all require GeckoLib. Only the oldest Forge files, for early releases, need no dependencies. Put the library in the mods folder alongside the mod itself.

Does Nether Depths Upgrade work in multiplayer?

Yes, but it is required on both sides. Players need the mod and GeckoLib installed, and the host of the world needs them too. Someone joining without them will not be able to connect.
