Snow Under Trees

Adds snow beneath trees in snowy biomes, both in freshly generated chunks and while it snows. It is required on the server and does not run on the client.

Snow Under Trees is a server-side mod for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt that puts snow on the ground beneath trees in biomes cold enough for snow. bl4ckscor3 made it during the MMD WinterJam 2019, and an older Forge line has since stopped.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric and Quilt: Minecraft 26.1 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies; builds for 26.1 to 26.2 require Fabric API and Forge Config API Port.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.1 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.14.4 to 1.20.1, builds stopped after July 2025. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What it changes

Snow appears under trees whenever new chunks generate, and again whenever it is snowing in the world. Only biomes where snow can fall are affected, so normal forests look exactly as before. The creator's comparison uses the vanilla Snowy Taiga, generated with and without the mod.

Biome and mod support

Modded biomes are covered, with named support for Terralith, Oh The Biomes You'll Go, Oh The Biomes We've Gone, Biomes O' Plenty, Snow! Real Magic!, Eternal Winter, Dynamic Trees and Moonrise. It also works alongside Serene Seasons. If a listed mod does not behave, the issue tracker on GitHub is where to report it.

Configuration

  • enable_biome_feature: set to false to stop snow generating under trees in new chunks.
  • enable_when_snowing: set to false to stop snow forming under trees during snowfall.
  • filtered_biomes: biome IDs listed here are left alone entirely. Find the ID of your current biome on the F3 screen, for example minecraft:plains.

Installation

Pick the release that matches your loader and Minecraft release, drop the mod file into the mods folder, and start the server with that loader. If you have not set up a loader yet, follow how to install mods on Java Edition. The feature set is narrow by design, so there is little else to configure.

Questions about Snow Under Trees.

4 questions

Does Snow Under Trees work on multiplayer servers?

Yes, and the server is where it belongs. The mod is required on the server and the client is unsupported, so players joining do not install it themselves.

Does Snow Under Trees change normal forests?

No. Only biomes in which it is cold enough to snow are affected, such as the Snowy Taiga. Ordinary forests and other warm biomes generate exactly as they do in vanilla, and you can also exclude any biome by adding its ID to the filtered_biomes option.

How do I stop snow forming under trees during snowfall?

Set the enable_when_snowing option to false. Snow will then no longer be added under trees while it snows. Setting enable_biome_feature to false separately turns off snow in newly generated chunks, so you can disable either behaviour or both.

Which modded biomes does Snow Under Trees support?

Named support covers Terralith, Oh The Biomes You'll Go, Oh The Biomes We've Gone and Biomes O' Plenty. Snow! Real Magic!, Serene Seasons, Eternal Winter, Dynamic Trees and Moonrise are listed too. If one does not work, the GitHub issue tracker is the place to report it.
