Snowy Weather is a snowy weather data pack and mod for Java that replaces rain and thunderstorms with snow in every biome, deserts included. Temperature in all biomes sits below 0, water freezes, and snow settles on the ground. It ships for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and as a plain data pack. Install it on the host of a multiplayer world; players who join do not need it.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies; some builds for 1.20 to 1.21.7 require Fabric API.
- Forge: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.3 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
- Quilt: Minecraft 1.21.5 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
What changes in the world
Every newly generated chunk comes out frozen. Chunks created before you added the pack still get the treatment: when weather arrives, they freeze gradually, so an existing world slowly turns white. Caves and other dimensions are the only places left to escape the cold.
The trade-off is plain. Temperature in every biome is below 0, so rain and thunderstorms always fall as snow, including in hot biomes.
Mod or data pack
- Mod route: put the file for your loader in the mods folder and launch with that loader's profile. The mod install guide covers the steps.
- Data pack route: use the plain data pack file, which needs no loader. It reaches back to 1.16 and up to 26.3, which suits worlds that stay on vanilla.
Unlimited snow accumulation
For players who want deep drifts, an optional function removes the usual cap on snow. When a snow layer reaches 8, it is replaced by a snow block. This applies to players within 8 blocks in every direction.
- Enable with `/function snowy_weather:unlimited_snow_accumulation_height`
- Disable with `/schedule clear snowy_weather:unlimited_snow_accumulation_height`

Questions about Snowy Weather.
4 questions
Can I use Snowy Weather as a data pack without a mod loader?
Yes. Besides the Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt files, the project ships a plain data pack that needs no loader. Its files cover releases from 1.16 up to 26.3, so it also fits worlds that stay on vanilla.
What happens if I remove Snowy Weather from a world?
Biomes return to their original state once the pack or mod is gone. Snow and ice that already fell or formed stay in place, so you may need to clear or melt them yourself.
Does Snowy Weather affect worlds I have already explored?
Yes. Newly generated chunks are frozen from the start. Chunks saved before you installed it still get snowy weather, and everything in them freezes gradually over time rather than all at once.
Do players need Snowy Weather installed to join a multiplayer world?
No. It is required on the host of the world, while the player side is optional. Install it where the world runs, whether as a loader mod or as the plain data pack. Removing it later returns biomes to their original state, though fallen snow and ice remain.
