What Are They Up To (Watut)

Watut makes player activity visible to everyone in multiplayer. You see typing, open screens and idle sleepers, with animated visuals in the world and a Zz marker in the tab list.

What Are They Up To, short name Watut, is a utility mod for Java that shows what other players are doing. It is current on NeoForge and must be installed on both sides, so the host and every player need it. Corosus made it, and it needs the CoroUtil library to run.

Loaders and versions

  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.1 to 1.21.8. The newest build requires CoroUtil; some builds for 1.20.1 need no dependencies.
  • Fabric: Minecraft 1.16.5 to 1.21.4, builds stopped after April 2025. The newest build requires CoroUtil; some builds for 1.20.1 need no dependencies.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.16.5 to 1.21, builds stopped after March 2025. The newest build requires CoroUtil; some builds for 1.20.1 need no dependencies.

What you see in the world

  • Typing is shown in the world and in GUI. The visual gets faster and wackier the faster they type.
  • Opening a screen such as the inventory, a chest or crafting shows their hand moving and clicking at a panel in front of them.
  • After five idle minutes the player falls asleep in the world, and a Zz indicator appears in the tab player list.

Privacy is built in. Commands a player types are hidden by default, and nobody can see the contents of another player's inventory. Modded containers work, but only the vanilla inventory screen is displayed for now, not modded GUIs.

Installation

Install the loader first with the Forge and NeoForge guide, then follow the general mod installation steps. Put the Watut file and the CoroUtil file in the mods folder on every machine involved. The mod needs data from the host in order to show you what other players are doing.

Configuration and trade-offs

Each feature the player's side sends to the host can be switched off individually, and idle notices in chat are off by default. Two fixes come from the creator for modpacks. If the dynamic GUI flickers, run the following command.

  • Flickering GUI visual: /coro config common set watut-server.toml dynamicGuiDontSendConstantGUIUpdates true
  • Missing dynamic GUI visual, to return to the simple one: /coro config common set watut-server.toml dynamicGuiUseOldSimpleGUIVisual true

Questions about What Are They Up To (Watut).

4 questions

Does What Are They Up To work on multiplayer servers?

Yes, it is built for multiplayer. It must be installed on both the host and every connecting player, because the data about who is typing or idle comes from the host. Without it on both sides, the visuals do not appear.

Do I need CoroUtil for What Are They Up To?

Yes, the newest releases require CoroUtil, and the mod will not run without it. Some older releases for 1.20.1 need no dependencies, but current NeoForge releases do need the library.

Can other players see what is in my inventory?

No. The mod shows that a player has a screen open and animates a hand clicking at it, but the contents of inventories stay private. Commands you type are also hidden by default.

How do I stop the dynamic GUI from flickering?

Run the command /coro config common set watut-server.toml dynamicGuiDontSendConstantGUIUpdates true. If the new dynamic GUI does not appear at all, set dynamicGuiUseOldSimpleGUIVisual to true with the same command pattern.
