NPC Plugin is an NPC plugin for Minecraft servers that creates and manages player-like NPCs from an in-game editor. It runs on Spigot, Paper, Purpur and Folia, and it is server-side only. Players join with a normal client and install nothing.

Server software and versions

  • Folia, Paper and Purpur: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally PlaceholderAPI.
  • Spigot: Minecraft 1.17.1 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally PlaceholderAPI.

What it does

Run `/npc create` to place an NPC, then `/npc edit` to enter edit-mode. Interacting with an NPC opens its editor GUI. From there you change the name, skin, equipment, glow, visibility, tab-list entry, pose, scale and look-at-player radius. Skins can come from a player name, UUID, local .png, URL or .yml file.

  • Click actions for left, right or both clicks, built as chains from Command, Server (BungeeCord), Wait, Animation, Path, SetVariable, Condition, Loop, Npc and Stop steps.
  • Paths built from points, visualised, tested with a temporary NPC and reused in actions.
  • AI goals: Walk to Location, Walk Path, Follow Entity, Attack Entity, Look Around, Wait and Wander.
  • An expression parser with local, instance and global variables, plus language files (default en_US).

Installation

  1. 1.Put the jar in the server's plugins folder. The plugin install guide covers the basics.
  2. 2.Start the server once so the plugin generates its files.
  3. 3.Optionally edit plugins/NpcPlugin/config.yml and the lang files.
  4. 4.Restart, or run `/npc reload`.

Trade-offs

The feature set is deep, and the action chains and expressions take time to learn. PlaceholderAPI is an optional soft dependency, supported in plugin messages where applicable. Developers get a separate API, documented in the GitHub wiki, for building on top of the plugin.

Questions about NPC Plugin.

5 questions

How do I install NPC Plugin?

Place the jar in the plugins folder of a Spigot, Paper, Purpur or Folia server, start the server once, then restart or run /npc reload after any config changes. Players need no client-side install. Use /npc create to make your first NPC and /npc edit to open the editor.

Does NPC Plugin work on Folia?

Yes, Folia builds exist, but the creator labels Folia support as beta and warns it may contain bugs. Expect rough edges on Folia compared with Paper, and report problems on the GitHub issue tracker.

Does NPC Plugin need PlaceholderAPI?

No. The newest build has no required dependencies. PlaceholderAPI is an optional soft dependency that lets placeholders be used in plugin messages where applicable.

How do I make an NPC run a command when clicked?

Open the NPC editor with /npc edit and interact with the NPC, then choose Click Action. Add a Command action for left, right or both clicks. Placeholders such as {player} insert the clicking player's name, so an action like msg {player} Welcome! works.

Can I upgrade from an old version straight to 3.x?

Not from anything earlier than 2.1.0. First update to a release between 2.1.0 and 2.4.2, then install 3.x.x. Follow that order before installing 3.x.x on a server that still runs an older release.
