Simple Ranks is a simple ranks plugin for Paper, Spigot and Bukkit servers. It gives each player a colored rank prefix in chat and the tab list, with a priority order for the list. It runs on the server only, so players join with a normal client.

Server software and versions

  • Bukkit, Paper and Spigot: Minecraft 1.20 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies, optionally PlaceholderAPI.

What it does

You create as many ranks as you like, color them with `&` codes, and assign them to players one by one. A default rank covers everyone who has not been given one. The display is cosmetic and chat-focused, and the feature list stops there.

  • Chat prefix such as [Admin] before the player name
  • Tab list prefix, sorted by rank priority (lower number ranks higher)
  • Optional bracket styling, per rank or switched off globally
  • A toggle for white or gray chat message color

Commands

Everything runs through `/rank`, with `/r` as a shorter alias. Tab completion is built in.

  • `/rank create` and `/rank delete` add or remove a rank
  • `/rank set` assigns a rank to a player, and `/rank give` does the same
  • `/rank setdefault` picks the fallback rank
  • `/rank get` shows a player's rank, and `/rank list` shows every rank
  • `/rank importanttext true|false` switches chat message color
  • `/rank bracketcolor` changes a rank's bracket color

Configuration and PlaceholderAPI

Settings live in `config.yml` with three top-level keys: `default-rank`, `ranks` and `player-ranks`. The plugin writes ranks and player assignments into the file itself. Each rank can carry a `priority` and a `brackets` flag, and `brackets.enabled` is the global switch.

With PlaceholderAPI installed, four variables become available to other plugins: `%simpleranks_rank%` (colored prefix, no brackets), `%simpleranks_raw_rank%` (the uncolored name as written in the config), `%simpleranks_prefix%` (colored prefix with brackets) and `%simpleranks_important%` (true or false).

Installation

  1. 1.Drop the plugin file into the `plugins` folder of your Paper, Spigot or Bukkit server.
  2. 2.Restart the server.
  3. 3.Run `/rank create` for each rank, then `/rank set` for your players.

Questions about Simple Ranks.

3 questions

How do I install Simple Ranks?

Place the plugin file in the plugins folder of your Paper, Spigot or Bukkit server and restart. Then create ranks with /rank create and assign them with /rank set. Players do not install anything and join with a normal client.

Does Simple Ranks need PlaceholderAPI?

No. The newest release requires no dependencies and shows ranks in chat and the tab list on its own. PlaceholderAPI is optional and only adds variables such as %simpleranks_prefix% for other plugins to read.

Do players need to install Simple Ranks?

No. It is a server-side plugin, and the client is unsupported. Only the server needs it, and players see the rank prefixes in chat and the tab list when they join with an ordinary client.
