Alternative Rain Sounds is a Java Edition resource pack by paoleks that replaces the default rain and thunder audio with more realistic, atmospheric recordings. It is a plain resource pack, so there is no loader to match and no required mod. It targets one thing, the sound of weather, and leaves the rest of the sound set alone.

Supported versions

  • Minecraft 1.11 to 1.21.11.

What changes in the sound

Rain sounds more realistic and atmospheric than the default. Thunder becomes more dramatic and powerful. The recordings come from Pixabay and Freesound, and the creator lists each original on the CurseForge page.

  • Rain sounds replaced with more realistic ambience.
  • Thunder replaced with more powerful, dramatic sounds.
  • Listed on CurseForge under Miscellaneous and 16x.
  • Newest build requires no other mod or library.

How to install Alternative Rain Sounds

New to packs? The guide to installing resource packs on Java and Bedrock covers the folder and load order in more detail. A pack built for another release can still load, but it shows an incompatibility warning.

Using it in a modpack

The creator states that anyone may include the pack in their own modpack. Because the project links no source repository and carries no licence on CurseForge, that statement on the page is the only permission on record.

Questions about Alternative Rain Sounds.

3 questions

How do I install Alternative Rain Sounds?

Place the downloaded .zip in the resourcepacks folder, which you can reach through Options, Resource Packs, Open Pack Folder. Then move the pack to the Selected side of the Resource Packs screen. Keep the file zipped, and rain and thunder will use the new sounds as soon as the pack loads.

Does Alternative Rain Sounds need OptiFine?

No. The newest build lists no requirements, so no OptiFine, no library and no other mod is needed. It is a regular resource pack that works through the standard Resource Packs screen on Java Edition.

Is Alternative Rain Sounds available for Bedrock?

No. The pack is published for Java Edition only. Bedrock uses a different resource pack format, so this file will not load there. Bedrock players need a pack made specifically for that edition.
