LifeSteal FR

A configurable lifesteal ruleset from Stoupy51, modelled on the original Lifesteal SMP. Players gain and lose hearts through kills and deaths, and anyone who runs out is banned by default.

LifeSteal FR is a lifesteal datapack by Stoupy51, also shipped as a mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. It brings the heart-stealing rules of the original Lifesteal SMP to Java. It must run on the server, while installing it on the client is optional.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric, Forge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.21 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.21.4 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.

Install it as a mod or as a datapack

The mod route suits servers that already run a loader. Pick the file for your loader and the matching Minecraft release, drop it in the mods folder, and start with that loader's profile. The mod installation guide covers the steps.

The plain datapack route works without any loader. It also needs the separate resource pack from the same page, which supplies the revive beacon texture.

How the heart system plays

  • Killing a player steals a heart from the victim. Dying to natural causes costs a heart, which drops at the death location.
  • Players withdraw hearts with /trigger life_steal.withdraw, and eat a heart item to gain it back.
  • Revived players respawn with 4 hearts by default, and the amount is configurable.
  • The default cap is 20 hearts, the minimum is 0, and dropped hearts never despawn.

Configuration

Since 1.5.0, running /function life_steal:_config opens a clickable menu for every setting. Operators can also set values with scoreboard commands. The options include half hearts, a spectator mode instead of a ban, a last chance at one heart above the minimum, instant heart consumption, and turning off stealing on kills.

The trade-off is the defaults. Hitting the minimum means a ban, so test your settings before opening the world to players.

Questions about LifeSteal FR.

4 questions

Is LifeSteal FR a datapack or a mod?

It is both. The core is a datapack, and the same rules also ship as mod files for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. Use the datapack if you want no loader, or the mod if your server already runs one. The datapack route also needs the separate resource pack.

Do players need to install LifeSteal FR on their own client?

No. The system runs on the server, and client installation is optional. Players on the datapack route should still load the resource pack, since it provides the revive beacon texture. Everything else works from the server alone.

Why does the ban not work on my lifesteal server?

The ban feature needs function permission level 3. Open server.properties, set function-permission-level=3, then restart the server. Without that line the ban never triggers, which is the most common issue with LifeSteal FR.

Can players go to spectator mode instead of being banned?

Yes. Players are banned by default at the minimum heart limit, but the spectator setting moves them to spectator mode instead. Turn it on from the /function life_steal:_config menu or with the SPECTATOR_INSTEAD scoreboard command.
