Manhunt is a manhunt data pack that also ships bundled as a mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. It splits players into hunters and runners, and it tracks multiple players in both the Overworld and the Nether. The world needs it on the server side, while clients can join without installing anything.
Loaders and versions
- Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.17 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
Installing the data pack
The data pack route needs no loader, and it is the one that works on Realms. Use it when you cannot add mods to the host.
- 1.Open the datapacks folder of the world you want to play in.
- 2.Drag Manhunt.zip into that folder.
- 3.Enable it in the world with /datapack enable "file/Manhunt.zip".
A message saying the pack is not supported on lower releases than the ones it lists can be ignored, the pack still works.
Installing the mod
For the mod route, set up your loader first (the Java mod guide covers the steps), put the mod file in the mods folder, then open the world. No other mod is required.
Running a round
- Add hunters with /team join hunters player_name.
- Add runners with /team join runners player_name.
- Start with /function manhunt:start_game.
- Leave without restarting or clearing inventories by using /function manhunt:pause_game, then /function manhunt:resume_game to continue.
When a runner changes dimension, the compass points at the portal they used, so tracking carries on in the Nether.
Configuration
Everything is set through scoreboard commands. The start delay defaults to 45 and changes with /scoreboard players set Temp manhunt_lead 60. A minimum tracking distance, inside which the compass spins wildly, is off by default. Set it with /scoreboard players set Temp manhunt_min_dst 400, where the value is the distance squared (400 gives 20 blocks). Reset it with /scoreboard players reset Temp manhunt_min_dst. Hide the sidebar scoreboard with /scoreboard objectives setdisplay sidebar.
Questions about Manhunt.
4 questions
How do I start a manhunt with this data pack?
Put players on teams with /team join hunters player_name and /team join runners player_name. Then run /function manhunt:start_game. The start delay defaults to 45 and can be changed with the manhunt_lead scoreboard value. Pausing and resuming use the pause_game and resume_game functions.
Does the Manhunt data pack work on Realms?
Yes. The creator states it is compatible with Realms because it is a data pack, and the mod files are not needed there. Add Manhunt.zip to the world's datapacks folder and enable it with the datapack command.
Do players need the mod installed to join a manhunt?
No. The pack is required on the server side and optional on the client side. Whether you use the data pack or the mod, players without it can still join a world that has it running.
How does the compass track runners in the Nether?
When a runner moves between dimensions, the compass points to the portal they entered. That lets hunters keep following in the Overworld and the Nether. A minimum tracking distance can also be set, inside which the compass spins.
