Mod Name Tooltip is a Java mod, built by mezz, that adds the name of the owning mod to an item's tooltip. It is the simplest answer to the question of which mod an unfamiliar item belongs to. It targets NeoForge, with older Forge releases that have since stopped, and it only matters on the player's own side.

Loaders and versions

  • NeoForge: Minecraft 1.20.4 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Forge: Minecraft 1.14.3 to 1.20.1, builds stopped after July 2023. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What it does

Hover over any item and the tooltip now names the mod that added it. That is the whole feature.

Installation

  1. 1.Install NeoForge for your target release using the Forge and NeoForge guide.
  2. 2.Pick the mod file that matches your loader and game release, then place it in the mods folder of your Java install.
  3. 3.Launch with the NeoForge profile and hover over any item to confirm the mod name shows.

General steps for placing mod files are in the Java mod install guide. Nothing else needs installing alongside it.

Side and trade-offs

The trade-off is scope. It does one thing and offers nothing beyond that, and Forge users are stuck on releases that stopped after July 2023. The author notes that it does not interact with other mods, which is why it is described as extremely reliable. It may be used in modpacks freely.

Questions about Mod Name Tooltip.

3 questions

What does Mod Name Tooltip do?

It adds the name of the mod that owns an item to that item's tooltip. Hover over any stack and the line appears. It changes nothing else, which makes it handy for identifying unfamiliar items in a large modpack.

Does Mod Name Tooltip need to be installed on a multiplayer host?

No. The files are tagged for the player's side only, so the tooltip line is added by the mod on your own install. Other players who want the same line add it themselves.

Can I include Mod Name Tooltip in a modpack?

Yes. The author's page says to feel free, and the code in the repository is under the MIT licence. Pick the file that matches the loader and game release your pack targets.
