Woodcutter is a data pack that lets the stonecutter process every wood type into planks, stairs, slabs and more. It also ships as a mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, so you can pick whichever route suits your setup. It is required on the hosting side of a multiplayer world, and optional for players who join.

Loaders and versions

  • Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt: Minecraft 1.14 to 1.21.11. The newest build needs no dependencies.

Installation

There are two routes. For the mod, drop the file for your loader into the mods folder and start the loader's profile (the mod installation guide covers the steps). The project also offers a plain data pack as a separate file, which involves no loader. The newest release needs no other mods or libraries on any route.

What the recipes do

  • Logs and planks convert into further processed forms such as planks, stairs and slabs.
  • Fences, fence gates, doors and trapdoors can be cut from logs, but not from planks.
  • Shelves can be made from logs and stripped logs at 1:1. Wood blocks (bark on all sides) cannot be used, because vanilla has no recipe that turns them back into logs.
  • Bamboo blocks give fewer outputs, since one bamboo block yields only 2 bamboo planks.

Why some recipes are missing

The cap is deliberate. SpeedyNurBesser set the rules so the stonecutter never gains more than 0.5 extra planks over the crafting table, which matches the most vanilla allows. A stone stair, for example, costs 1.5 stones at a crafting table. That is why planks alone cannot produce fences, doors or trapdoors, while logs can.

Questions about Woodcutter.

4 questions

How do I use the stonecutter with wood?

Install Woodcutter, place a log or plank in a stonecutter, and the wood outputs appear in its recipe grid. Logs unlock the widest range, including fences, doors and trapdoors. Planks give a narrower set, because the recipes are capped at 0.5 extra planks over crafting table costs.

Is Woodcutter a data pack or a mod?

Both. The same project ships a plain data pack and mod files for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. Each is made for 1.14 to 1.21.11, and the newest release of each needs no other mods.

Does Woodcutter work in multiplayer?

Yes. It is required on the hosting side of a multiplayer world and optional for players who join. Players joining a world that already has it do not need to install anything themselves, so a host can add the data pack or the mod without asking everyone to change their setup.

Why can't I craft fences from planks in the stonecutter?

It is a balance choice. Fences, gates, doors and trapdoors would cost the stonecutter user more than the 0.5 extra planks it is allowed to save. They are available from logs instead.
