Head Drop

Players drop their own head when they die, and one config.yml controls when, how often and with what effects. It adds a stats screen and a give command.

Head Drop is a head drop plugin that makes players drop their head when they die. It runs natively on Spigot, Paper, Purpur and Folia, plus Bukkit builds, and it is needed on the server only. Players join with a normal client and install nothing.

Server software and versions

  • Bukkit, Paper, Purpur and Spigot: Minecraft 1.18 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.
  • Folia: Minecraft 26.1 to 26.3. The newest build needs no dependencies.

What it changes

Everything lives in one `config.yml`. Left untouched, drops behave like vanilla, with no effects, broadcasts or special visuals. Turn features on as you need them.

  • Drop modes: any death, player kills only (`pvp`) or environmental deaths only (`pve`), with an exact chance from 0% to 100%.
  • Farm prevention: an optional cap on how many heads one player can ever drop, plus a world blacklist and an option to skip invisible players.
  • Placement: heads drop as items or land as head blocks facing the way the player looked, with a fallback to a normal drop.
  • Head item: editable name and lore, 10 placeholders, hex and legacy colours, a despawn timer and anvil rename blocking. Name and lore can persist after the head is placed or mined.
  • Effects: a harmless lightning bolt, a custom sound, particles in 7 shapes and a coloured glowing outline in 16 colours.
  • Broadcasts: an optional global chat message when a head drops.

Installation

  1. 1.Download the build that matches your server software and follow the general steps in how to install plugins.
  2. 2.Place the `.jar` file in the `plugins` folder.
  3. 3.Restart the server, then edit `config.yml` and run `/head reload` to apply changes.

Commands and permissions

  • `/head help` (`head.command.help`) and `/head stats` (`head.command.stats`) are open to everyone by default.
  • `/head give`, `/head reset` and `/head reload` need `head.command.give`, `head.command.reset` and `head.command.reload`, which default to OP.

The `/head stats` screen lists each player's drop count and last drop time, with global totals, sorting and live skins. Storage survives restarts, and the command can be disabled in the config. An outdated config is backed up and upgraded on startup.

Questions about Head Drop.

5 questions

How do I install Head Drop on my server?

Download the build that matches your server software, place the .jar file in the plugins folder and restart the server. Edit config.yml afterwards and run /head reload to apply changes. Players need nothing extra and join with a normal client.

Does Head Drop work on Folia?

Yes. Folia is supported natively alongside Spigot, Paper and Purpur, and the newest release needs no dependencies. Folia builds cover a narrower span of game versions than the other software, so check the version list before downloading.

Can I stop players farming heads?

Yes. Set a per-player drop limit so each player can only ever drop a chosen number of heads. You can also blacklist worlds, skip invisible players, limit drops to PvP or PvE, and lower the drop chance. The /head reset command clears one player's counter.

Who can use Head Drop commands?

Help and stats are open to everyone by default. Give, reset and reload default to OP players through the head.command permission nodes. The stats command can also be switched off entirely in the config if you do not want it.

Do I need to reconfigure after updating Head Drop?

No. On startup an outdated config.yml is backed up automatically and upgraded to the new layout, keeping the settings you already changed. Run /head reload after any manual edit to apply it without restarting.
