ItemTag is a server plugin for Paper, Purpur and Spigot that extends ItemEdit with non-vanilla item properties. The itemtag plugin attaches commands, potion effects and restrictions to items, which suits RPG servers and adventure maps. It runs on the server only, and players join with a normal client.

Server software and versions

  • Paper, Purpur and Spigot: Minecraft 1.8.8 to 26.2. The newest build requires ItemEdit; some builds for 1.8.8 to 26.1.2 need no dependencies.

What it does

Everything runs through /itemtag, with /it as the alias. You add a behavior to an item, and the plugin enforces it from then on.

  • Run commands when an item is used, such as on right-click.
  • Run commands when an item is consumed, covering food, drinks and potions.
  • Apply potion effects while the item is worn as equipment.
  • Make items uncraftable, unplaceable, or unrenamable in an anvil.
  • Disable smelting or enchanting on chosen items.

Tab-completion and clickable help messages with hover descriptions keep the command approachable. Messages follow each player's client language, and more than 10 languages ship with the plugin.

Installation

  1. 1.Install ItemEdit first, since ItemTag is an extension of it.
  2. 2.Place the ItemTag file in the plugins folder of your Paper, Purpur or Spigot server.
  3. 3.Restart the server so both plugins load.
  4. 4.Use /itemtag (or /it) to add behaviors to an item.

Questions about ItemTag.

5 questions

How do I install ItemTag on my server?

Install ItemEdit first, then drop the ItemTag file into the plugins folder of a Paper, Purpur or Spigot server and restart. Once the server is back up, /itemtag (alias /it) adds behaviors to items. Players do not install anything and join with a normal client.

Does ItemTag work without ItemEdit?

The newest build requires ItemEdit, and ItemTag is described as an extension of it. Some builds for 1.8.8 to 26.1.2 need no dependencies. If you run a current server, plan on installing ItemEdit alongside ItemTag.

Which Minecraft versions does ItemTag support?

ItemTag lists Paper, Purpur and Spigot builds covering Minecraft 1.8.8 to 26.2. The latest release, 3.7.7, appeared on 2026-07-02. Older Minecraft releases can need extra libraries, so check the requirements of the file you pick.

Can ItemTag give players permanent potion effects?

Yes, within limits. ItemTag applies potion effects while a player wears the equipment carrying them, so the effect follows the item rather than lasting forever. It can also run commands when an item is consumed or right-clicked.

Do players need ItemTag installed on their own computers?

No. ItemTag is a server-side plugin and does not support the client. Only the server owner installs it, and players connect with an unmodified client while the server enforces every item behavior.
