Better Bushy Leaves is a resource pack for Java Edition that adds one or two extra cubes to each leaf block, and it is designed to be less laggy than heavier bushy leaves packs. It runs on the client only and needs no companion mods. It suits players who want bushy foliage without the frame drops that heavier bushy leaves packs can cause.

Supported versions

  • Minecraft 1.19 to 26.1.

What changes visually

Oak, dark oak, birch, azalea, jungle and mangrove leaves get randomly placed cubes. Spruce and acacia leaves use flatter cubes instead. Each leaf block gains one, maybe two, extra cubes, where other bushy packs can add up to six per block. That lower count is the pack's whole argument, since fewer models means less to render.

The pack has no fixed resolution. It works with any resource pack that has its own leaf textures, including packs that already ship bushy leaves of their own.

How to install Better Bushy Leaves

  1. 1.Download the .zip from Modrinth and place it in the resourcepacks folder (Options > Resource Packs > Open Pack Folder).
  2. 2.Move the pack to the Selected side of the Resource Packs screen.
  3. 3.Put it above any other pack whose leaves you want to override, so its bushy models win.
  4. 4.If you have never loaded a pack before, the resource pack install guide covers the screen step by step.

Known limitations

The trade-off is subtlety. With one or two cubes per block, the foliage reads less dense than packs that stack up to six, so expect a lighter bushy look in exchange for smoother performance. A pack with a different leaf model placed above this one will take priority.

Questions about Better Bushy Leaves.

3 questions

Does Better Bushy Leaves work with other resource packs?

Yes. It works with any resource pack that has its own leaves, even one that already includes bushy leaves. Place Better Bushy Leaves above that pack on the Selected side of the Resource Packs screen so its leaf models are applied on top.

Is Better Bushy Leaves meant to reduce lag?

That is its stated purpose. It adds only one or maybe two extra cubes to each leaf block, while other bushy leaves packs may add up to six per block, which is the heaviest case. Fewer cubes per block means fewer models to draw.

Is Better Bushy Leaves available for Bedrock?

No. It is a Java Edition pack distributed on Modrinth. It is also client only, so it should not be installed on a dedicated server.
