Better Carpets is a vanilla-like 16x resource pack for Minecraft Java that gives wool, moss and pale moss carpets thin 3D overhangs over exposed block edges. It runs on plain Minecraft with no OptiFine and no extra mods, and it only needs to be installed on the player's own installation.

Supported versions

  • Minecraft 1.13 to 26.3.

What changes visually

The original top textures stay untouched. The pack adds model geometry around the edges, so a carpet reads as material resting on a block instead of a flat sheet. Overhangs lean outward at 20° on Minecraft 1.21.6 and newer, and at 22.5° on older releases.

  • Wool carpets get full, short and uneven fringe variants in all 16 colors.
  • Moss carpets get varied strands and gently angled overhangs around exposed edges (Minecraft 1.17 onward).
  • Pale moss carpets get matching pale overhangs that occasionally spread across nearby surfaces (Minecraft 1.21.4 onward).
  • Fringe length, arrangement and orientation are randomized, but the top texture is never rotated.
  • Carpet items use a raised, angled inventory view that shows the edge detail.

How to install Better Carpets

Each Minecraft release has its own file, and the Modrinth App picks the right one when you add the pack to an instance. For a manual setup, follow these steps, or read the guide to installing resource packs.

  1. 1.Get the file that matches your Minecraft release.
  2. 2.Put the .zip in the resourcepacks folder (Options, Resource Packs, Open Pack Folder).
  3. 3.Move Better Carpets to the Selected side of the Resource Packs screen.
  4. 4.If another pack edits the same carpets, place Better Carpets above it so its models win.

Known limitations

The moss work stops at carpet edges and spreading. It does not add the flowers, clovers or sprouts found in Better Moss.

Questions about Better Carpets.

4 questions

Does Better Carpets need OptiFine?

No. Better Carpets works with plain Minecraft and needs neither OptiFine nor any other mod. It changes carpets through ordinary resource pack models and textures, so you only add the pack file and enable it on the Resource Packs screen.

Is Better Carpets available for Bedrock?

No. Better Carpets is a Java Edition pack distributed on Modrinth. Bedrock uses a different pack format, so the Java file will not work there. Players on Bedrock need a separate pack built for that format.

Does Better Carpets replace the original carpet textures?

No. The vanilla top textures remain intact, and the pack mainly adds extra model geometry around exposed edges. Randomization only changes the fringe pieces, so the main carpet pattern keeps its normal orientation.

Can I use Better Carpets with other resource packs?

Yes. When two packs change the same carpet models or textures, the one higher in the list generally overrides the other. Place Better Carpets above any pack that touches carpets if you want its fringes to show.
