| Minecraft versions | 1.21, 1.21.11, 26.1.2, 26.2 |
Bitmap Vanilla Shader is a post-processing resource pack for Java that renders the whole world in only black and white pixels. It needs no mods, no loader and no shader engine, and it applies on the player's own machine only.
Supported versions
- Minecraft 1.21.11 to 26.2.
- Minecraft 1.21 to 26.1.2.
What changes visually
Every frame is reduced to two colours. Shades are not drawn as greys, you interpret them through dithering. Grass, wood and stone lose their hues and survive as shape and contrast.
Eevee_17 also pitches it as a building constraint. With colour gone, a structure has to hold up through silhouette and shading alone.
How to turn it on
- 1.Put the .zip in the resourcepacks folder (Options, Resource Packs, Open Pack Folder), then move it to the Selected side. The install guide covers the steps.
- 2.Set graphics to Bitmap. The newest release only works with that setting on.
- 3.Releases in the 2.x line keep the effect always on.
Known limitations
The trade-off is that the effect depends on the Bitmap graphics setting, and colour is gone entirely. It is a Java-only pack, so Bedrock players cannot use it. A pack made for another game release can still load, but it shows an incompatibility warning.

Questions about Bitmap Vanilla Shader.
4 questions
Does Bitmap Vanilla Shader need mods?
No. It is a regular resource pack that uses the built-in post-processing system, so no mod, loader or shader engine is involved. You place the zip in the resourcepacks folder, select it, and set graphics to Bitmap so the effect turns on.
How do I turn on the bitmap effect?
Select the pack, then set graphics to Bitmap in the video settings. The newest release only works with that setting, and 2.x releases keep the effect always on.
Is Bitmap Vanilla Shader available for Bedrock?
No. The pack is listed for Java only, and Bedrock uses a different pack format. Nothing in the project covers Bedrock, so Bedrock players need a different solution for a black and white look.
Can I use it with a shader mod?
The pack describes itself as a vanilla post-processing shader and gives no compatibility details for combining it with shader mods, so there is nothing to confirm. It is built to work alone, with no extra software.
