Biomes O' Plenty is the most downloaded mod here that adds biomes you walk through, with 37.5 million downloads on Modrinth, and only the TerraBlender library, which several of these mods rely on, has more. Tectonic reshapes terrain rather than adding biomes. BetterEnd and BetterNether cover the End and Nether and are Fabric only. These eleven picks are a cut of the worldgen pages in our Java mods listing.
How we picked these biome and terrain mods
We started from the 73 Java worldgen mod pages we list and sorted by Modrinth downloads, read on 6 October 2026. We kept mods that add biomes or change terrain shape. We skipped structure packs, libraries other than TerraBlender, mob mods, utilities and the 3 pages with no Modrinth count. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score. Inside each group below, the order is by downloads.
| Project | Loaders | Newest supported version | Last update | Downloads on Modrinth |

What biome and terrain mods change
Two jobs hide under the same label. Biome mods add new biomes and the blocks, plants and mobs that come with them. Terrain mods change the shape of the land, such as mountain height, coastlines and rivers, and may add no biomes at all. Several picks also ship as data packs, which is a different route to the same worldgen; our explainer on world generation mods and data packs covers that split. Installing any of them follows the Java mod install guide.
Overworld biome mods
TerraBlender
TerraBlender
@Glitchfiend (Adubbz) · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
TerraBlender is a library for adding biomes, written by Adubbz, and Modrinth lists it as required on both client and server. It is the most downloaded page in our worldgen pool, and it adds nothing you can see by itself. You install it because a biome mod asks for it. That is no longer universal: recent Regions Unexplored builds ask for Lithostitched instead, and the newest Biomes O' Plenty builds ask for GlitchCore. The code is under LGPL-3.0, confirmed by the licence file in its repository.
Biomes O' Plenty
Biomes O' Plenty
@Forstride · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Pick this if you want a broad set of vanilla-style biomes across the Overworld, Nether and End. Its Modrinth summary promises 50+ biomes plus new trees, flowers and building blocks. The newest build on each loader requires GlitchCore, and the Fabric one also requires Fabric API. The trade-off is the licence: the repository carries an all rights reserved notice, and its page allows modpack inclusion only for builds uploaded directly by the team. Our comparison with Terralith and Tectonic sets it beside the other two big packs.
Oh The Biomes We've Gone
Oh The Biomes We've Gone
@JT122406 · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Potion Studios made this as the sequel to Oh The Biomes You'll Go. Its page promises over 50 biomes along with new mobs, structures and hundreds of blocks, so it suits players who want a content-heavy world rather than a light touch. The cost is the dependency list. The newest builds on every loader require Geckolib, Oh The Trees You'll Grow, TerraBlender and CorgiLib, with Fabric API added on Fabric and Quilt. The licence is all rights reserved, and its builds do not go past the 1.21.x line.
Regions Unexplored
Regions Unexplored
@Apollo · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Apollo's mod adds 64 biomes across the Overworld and Nether, according to its own page, and is MIT licensed. Choose it on Fabric or NeoForge: the newest builds require Lithostitched, with Fabric API on Fabric, and are marked beta. The trade-off is loader support. Forge builds stopped in March 2025 and Quilt builds in March 2024. Its page also says it has no wiki or current full biome list, so you will be exploring to find out what is in it.
William Wythers' Overhauled Overworld
William Wythers' Overhauled Overworld
@Cristelknight · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
This one reworks the vanilla biomes with sub-biomes and smoother transitions rather than adding a long list of new ones. Its page says it uses only vanilla blocks, so friends can join a server with unmodded clients, and Modrinth lists the client as optional. Do not combine it with its sibling mod Expanded Ecosphere, which its page says is not meant to run alongside it. Forge builds stopped in June 2024, the licence is CC-BY-NC-ND-4.0 and no source repository is linked.
Nether and End biome mods
BetterEnd
BetterEnd
@Not disclosed by source · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
BetterEnd replaces the sparse End with 24+ biomes and a custom End generator that changes island shape, height and cave content, per its page. It is for Fabric players only. The newest Fabric build requires BCLib, Fabric API and World Weaver, and it is marked beta. It also adds mobs, tools, armour and rituals, so it is a gameplay overhaul as much as a terrain one. The code is MIT licensed.
BetterNether
BetterNether
@Team BetterX · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
From the same BetterX team, BetterNether adds new biomes, plants, materials and Nether cities. Its page describes a vertical and volumetric biome system that supports other mods and data packs. The loader and dependency story matches BetterEnd: Fabric only, with BCLib, Fabric API and World Weaver required on the newest build, which is a beta. Pick it if you want a fuller Nether and accept new mobs and items arriving with the biomes.
Terrain shape, cliffs and caves
Tectonic
Tectonic
@Apollo · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Tectonic changes how land is shaped: continents tens of thousands of blocks wide, mountain ranges, deeper oceans, canyons and underground rivers, per its page. It does not add biomes of its own, and its page says it works with biome mods built on TerraBlender or Biolith, naming Biomes O' Plenty and Regions Unexplored. Modrinth lists the server as required and the client as optional. The newest Fabric build needs Fabric API and Lithostitched. Its page says only 1.21.1 and 26.1 get fixes. Quilt builds stopped in February 2025.
Alex's Caves
Alex's Caves
@AlexModGuy · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
AlexModGuy's mod adds six rare cave biomes to the Overworld, such as the Magnetic Caves and the Candy Cavity, reached by finding an Underground Cabin. It requires Citadel and is for Forge and NeoForge only. The limits are plain: its builds stop at 1.20.1 and the last update was in October 2024. Its page also advises against shaders, which can change how several of the biomes look.
Stony Cliffs Are Cool
Stony Cliffs Are Cool
@bebebea_loste · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
This is a narrow fix with one job: it turns big steep dirt hills into stone cliffs. Its page says it works by adding a placed feature to every Overworld biome and should work with all mods. The author admits it is not the most optimized approach. Modrinth lists the client as optional. The Fabric build requires Lithostitched, and no source code is linked, with the licence listed as all rights reserved.
Epic Terrain
Epic Terrain
@wonderful_Ai_Chen · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Epic Terrain rewrites vanilla terrain with alpine peaks, continental plates, eroded coastlines and a new river system. It started as a data pack, and the newest builds are marked alpha. The author's page calls it experimental and says compatibility is not considered. Because it resets biome distribution, it is almost incompatible with mods that add biomes. Its page suggests the World Preview mod, since oceans can span 10,000 blocks.
Choosing and combining worldgen mods
Start with your loader, because it removes the most options. BetterEnd and BetterNether need Fabric, Alex's Caves needs Forge or NeoForge and 1.20.1, and Regions Unexplored is only current on Fabric and NeoForge. Our Fabric, Forge and NeoForge comparison helps if you have not settled that yet. Then decide whether you want new biomes or new terrain. Tectonic is the one the pack states works alongside Biomes O' Plenty and Regions Unexplored.
