Fresh Animations is the most downloaded of the vanilla texture packs for Minecraft that we list for Java, with 48,882,294 downloads on Modrinth (read 7 October 2026), and it animates mobs while keeping the default look. Faithful 64x suits players who want quadruple-resolution textures drawn from the default art. Low Fire and Low Shield each change a single first-person element. All twelve are Java Edition only.
How we picked these vanilla-style resource packs
We chose from the 51 vanilla-like resource packs we list for Java, took the 12 with the most downloads on Modrinth, and read the counts on 7 October 2026. We read each project's Modrinth page and its source repository where one exists. We did not benchmark or play-test any pack. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score. For what still counts as the plain game, see what vanilla Minecraft means.

Packs that keep the look and add detail
Fresh Animations
Fresh Animations
@FreshLX · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Pick it if you want mobs that move like the trailers while keeping the default models' look. Its page describes an animation overhaul that grows with each release, from villagers and illagers to Happy Ghasts. The trade-off is its dependency: it uses OptiFine's Custom Entity Models, or the Entity Model Features and Entity Texture Features mods instead, and some builds require both mods. Packs with their own entity models override its animations, and Rabbit, Panda, Warden and Ender Dragon are still listed as to come.
Motschen's Better Leaves
Motschen's Better Leaves
@Motschen · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
This one adds layers to leaf blocks so trees look bushier and denser, and its source is MIT licensed on GitHub. It suits players who want fuller trees without changing the rest of the palette. The trade-off sits in the design: the 9.0 line generates textures in advance for speed, so pairing it with another pack's custom leaves means compiling your own version. The 8.1 line adds no textures, but its page says that costs performance. The creator suggests the Cull Leaves mod alongside Sodium or Embeddium.
Fresh Animations Extensions
Fresh Animations: Extensions
@FreshLX · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
This bundles the creator's extension packs: Creeper Edit, Spider Edit, Classic Horses Edit, plus Details, Emissive and Objects add-ons that animate chests, boats and minecarts. It is for people who already run Fresh Animations. It needs that pack, must load above it, and its page says it is mostly suited to the vanilla look and unfriendly to other packs. Modrinth lists it as all rights reserved, and the terms bar redistribution.
Bare Bones
Bare Bones
@RobotPants · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Its Modrinth summary reads "Minecraft with the style of the trailers", and the page calls it simplistic and vibrant, a colour-forward take on the default textures at 16x. It suits anyone who wants brighter blocks without new shapes. The trade-off is currency: it has no build for the 26 series, the only pack in this set that stops in the 1.21 line. It is all rights reserved, and its terms forbid reuploading.
Faithful 64x
Faithful 64x
@HARYA301 · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Faithful 64x remakes the default art at quadruple the resolution, built on its 32x counterpart for consistency. Choose it if you want detail but still want the vanilla feel. Its source is on GitHub under the Faithful License. Its page gives no performance figures, so higher resolution is a hardware question you answer yourself. It also warns that downloads from sites other than its own listings are unsupported and could be dangerous.
Programmer Art Fix
Programmer Art Fix
@THGABS · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
This is a patch for the built-in Programmer Art pack, for players who prefer the classic look from before the 1.14 texture update. It covers blocks, items, mobs and equipment where Programmer Art has gaps, and tries to fix issues logged on Mojira. The limit is that it must sit above Programmer Art or it may not work correctly, so it is useless if you like the current look. Modrinth lists it as all rights reserved.
Enchantment Outlines
Enchantment Outlines
@tixul · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
It adds a pink outline to enchanted tools, plus 3D bows and maces, with options exposed through Respackopts. Its page says it is Sodium compatible and works with most shader packs. It suits players who want enchanted gear readable at a glance. The cost is older builds: some require CIT Resewn, and one needs Modefite - Item Definition Backport, so check the build for your version. The creator also points to MaskyEnchantedItems for colours other than pink.
Simple Grass Flowers
Simple Grass Flowers
@2DWisp · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
It adds flowers, clovers and rocks to grass, podzol, mycelium and both nylium blocks. No mods are required, though OptiFine or Continuity make the flowers in swamps, the Pale Garden and cherry groves match better. The trade-off is pack stacking: if you use Bare Bones you need the creator's separate compatible pack, and third-party ports are not allowed.
Packs that fix or tweak one thing
Fullbright UB
Fullbright UB
@worldresourcepack · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
It sets maximum brightness, so caves and nights stay visible without torches, mods or shaders, according to its page. It targets players who find darkness a nuisance, not a mechanic. The limit is that darkness stops mattering for visibility, which changes how cave exploring feels. With Sodium on a recent release it needs a small extra mod, Polytone. Modrinth lists it as all rights reserved, and no source repository is linked.
Default Dark Mode
Default Dark Mode
@nebulr · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
It darkens the interface and keeps the vanilla textures, and its page lists dozens of supported mods, including JEI, EMI and Sophisticated Backpacks, so modded screens match. Its source is on GitHub under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, a non-commercial licence. The trade-off is a single dependency: the dark loading screen needs OptiFine. Per-mod support differs by game version, so a mod you use may be covered on one release and not another.
Low Fire
Low Fire
@Oculie · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Low Fire lowers first-person fire by 6 pixels, which its page puts at 37.5 percent, and keeps the normal fire texture on blocks. It is for players who burn often, such as in the Nether or in combat, and want a clearer view. It changes only that one thing. It is all rights reserved, though the creator allows use in modpacks and resource packs with credit, and bars selling it or putting it behind payment.
Low Shield
Low Shield
@Oculie · Resource Pack
Checked Source and install notes
Low Shield lowers the held shield by 2.75 units and the blocking pose by 3, so it covers less of the screen. It suits shield users in combat. It also fixes MC-98631, where the right-hand shield sat higher than the left, on 1.21.11 and below. The trade-off is scope: it changes one model and nothing else. Licence terms match Low Fire, since it comes from the same creator, Oculie.
Resolution and performance
Eight packs carry Modrinth's 16x tag, Faithful 64x is the only 64x pack, and Better Leaves, Fullbright UB and Low Shield have no resolution tag. None of these pages gives a frame-rate figure for itself. Better Leaves is the one that discusses cost, saying its 8.1 line costs performance and 9.0 was built for speed. If frame rate is your worry, our lag and FPS guide covers the wider causes.
Version support
Nine of the twelve list 26.3 as their newest supported version. Better Leaves and Simple Grass Flowers stop at 26.2, and Bare Bones stops at 1.21.11. Default Dark Mode reaches back furthest, to 1.6. A pack built for another version can still load but shows an incompatibility warning, so a missing build is not a hard block. The resource pack install guide covers loading and ordering.
Which pack suits which player
Start with what you want to change. For living mobs, take Fresh Animations and accept its OptiFine or EMF and ETF requirement. For sharper blocks that still look default, take Faithful 64x. For a colourful 16x palette, take Bare Bones, while checking its version ceiling. For one irritation, such as fire, a shield, darkness or the interface, take the matching single-purpose pack. Everything else we left out is in our vanilla-style resource pack listing.
