For a different way to swing, Better Combat and Epic Fight rework melee itself. For new things to swing, Spartan Weaponry and Simply Swords add weapon types, and Immersive Armors adds armor sets. L_Ender's Cataclysm is the most downloaded of the twelve picks here, and it has no Fabric release. Every pick comes from our equipment category, and /mods lists the rest of our Java mods.

How we picked these weapon and armor mods

We read the 64 Java mods in our equipment category and kept the 12 that add or rework melee weapons, armor or melee combat. We left out guns, cannons, magic, HUD and storage mods. Download counts are Modrinth's, read on 9 October 2026, and they order the picks inside each group. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score.

Mods that change how melee combat plays

Better Combat

Better Combat

@ZsoltMolnarrr · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.18.2 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this if you want existing swords and axes to swing differently. It adds combos, an upswing before the hit, dual wielding and a reworked Sweeping Edge, aiming at the combat of Minecraft Dungeons. It adds no weapons of its own, and its page says other mods can plug in through data files. The limit is overlap: its page warns that mods changing the same mechanics, such as other dual wielding mods, will never be compatible. It needs Cloth Config API and Player Animation Library on current Fabric and NeoForge releases.

Epic Fight

Epic Fight

@Antikythera Studios · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.12.2 to 1.21.1

Checked Source and install notes

Epic Fight suits players who want souls-like fights rather than a polish of the vanilla swing. Its page describes new fighting styles, skills, dodging and special attacks, and it lists new weapons too. It must be installed on both sides in multiplayer. The trade-off is reach: there is no Fabric release, NeoForge support is limited to 1.21.1, and Immersive Armors lists Epic Fight as an incompatibility, saying its armors fall back to an ugly model.

Complete Shield Fixes

Complete Shield Fixes

@Walksy · Java Mod

JavaFabricv 1.19.4 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

A small pick for players who fight with shields, especially in PvP. It fixes two Mojang bugs, shield sounds and the animation glitch where a blocking shield is not shown as blocking. It is Fabric only, requires WalksyLib on current releases, and is listed as required for players but unsupported on the multiplayer host. It adds no content, so treat it as a repair to put beside a bigger combat mod.

Mods that add new swords and weapon types

L_Ender's Cataclysm

L_Ender's Cataclysm

@mcl_ender · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.19.2 to 1.21.5

Checked Source and install notes

This one is for players who want gear earned from fights. Its page describes difficult dungeons and boss encounters, with powerful items as the reward. The limit is loaders: it has NeoForge and Forge releases only, and the author's licence, CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, prohibits Fabric ports and any other ports. The newest release needs Lionfish-API and Curios API, and Forge releases stop at 1.20.1.

Spartan Weaponry

Spartan Weaponry

@ObliviousSpartan · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.12.2 to 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Choose it for the widest spread of classic weapon types. Its page lists daggers, longswords, katanas, halberds, lances, warhammers and more, each with its own properties such as reach, sweep or armor piercing. Most can be made from the five vanilla tool materials. The limit is age and loaders: the newest release dates from August 2025, it stops at 1.20.1 on NeoForge, and there is no Fabric release. It needs no other mod.

Simply Swords

Simply Swords

@Sweenus · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.18 to 1.21.1

Checked Source and install notes

Simply Swords suits players on Fabric who want spears, glaives, chakrams and twinblades. Its page counts 14 weapon variants, plus unique weapons found in chests that cannot be crafted. Better Combat is an optional pairing for the animations. The cost is dependencies: the newest release requires Simply Tooltips, Fzzy Config and Architectury API, and while Fabric and NeoForge releases stop at 1.21.1, Forge stops at 1.20.1. The licence is the author's own Timefall Development License.

Mods that add armor and new gear materials

Immersive Armors

Immersive Armors

@Luke100000 · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.16.5 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this for armor sets that change how you fight. Its page counts 40 armor items, among them Warrior armor that adds damage as health drops, Slime armor that bounces attackers and Divine armor that blocks an attack each minute. Recipes sit in the vanilla recipe book. The limit is rendering: its page lists Epic Fight and mods that draw armor with reduced transparency as incompatible. It is GPL-3.0 and needs no required dependency on NeoForge or Forge.

Mythic Metals

Mythic Metals

@Noaaan · Java Mod

JavaFabricv 1.18.2 to 1.21.4

Checked Source and install notes

This is for Fabric players who want a new ore and alloy progression behind their weapons and armor. Its page promises swords stronger than netherite and armor that grows over time. Better Combat names it as a partner mod. The limits are plain: the newest release is an alpha, Alloy Forgery is required and Fabric API is needed too. The code is MIT, but the textures are all rights reserved.

Armored Elytra

Armored Elytra

@DorkixAzIgazi · Java Mod

JavaFabricv 1.21 to 26.3

Checked Source and install notes

The narrowest pick, and the one for players who want chestplate protection while gliding. Its page says you combine any chestplate with an elytra in an anvil and split them again in a grindstone. Its logic runs on the multiplayer host, while installing it on the player's side is optional and adds item icons and model rendering. It is Fabric only, and the separate data pack release stopped at 1.21.4 in January 2025.

Mods for crafting and upgrading your own gear

Tinkers' Construct

Tinkers' Construct

@KnightMiner · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.6.4 to 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Tinkers' Construct is for players who want to assemble tools and weapons from parts and keep improving them. Its page describes part builders, modifier workstations and a smeltery for molten metals. The limits are support and status: it needs Mantle, NeoForge support covers only 1.20.1, and the newest release is marked beta. The licence is MIT, and its page allows use in modpacks.

Tetra

Tetra

@mickelus · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.19 to 1.20.1

Checked Source and install notes

Tetra suits players who want one weapon to grow through modules and improvements. Its page says you upgrade a crafting table into a workbench with a mallet, and that modified items improve through use. The limits are the narrow loader range, Forge and NeoForge on 1.20.1 at the top end, and the mutil library, which must be added by hand outside the CurseForge installer. It links no source code, and Modrinth lists the licence as All Rights Reserved.

Silent Gear

Silent Gear

@SilentChaos512 · Java Mod

JavaForge, NeoForgev 1.12.2 to 26.1.2

Checked Source and install notes

Silent Gear covers tools, weapons, armor and even elytra built from parts and graded materials, and data packs can add materials and change recipes. The cost is process: its page says blueprints or templates are essential for crafting any gear item, and Silent Lib is required. Forge releases end at 1.20.1.

What to check before you combine them

  • Match one loader and one game release across every mod. Fabric, Forge and NeoForge are not interchangeable, and the table shows Epic Fight and Cataclysm have no Fabric release.
  • Do not stack two mods that rework the same swing. Better Combat's page warns that mods changing the same mechanics will not be compatible, and Epic Fight overhauls combat as well.
  • Check armor against combat mods. Immersive Armors names Epic Fight as an incompatibility.
  • Plan for dependencies. Curios API, Architectury API, Mantle and Silent Lib are each required by at least one pick here.

The install steps for any of these are in our guides to installing Forge and NeoForge and installing Java mods.

How to choose between them

Start with your loader, because it removes more of this list than any taste does. Fabric players have Better Combat, Simply Swords, Immersive Armors, Mythic Metals, Complete Shield Fixes and Armored Elytra. Players on NeoForge or Forge can use most of the rest. Then decide whether you want to change how fighting works, which means Better Combat or Epic Fight, or what you fight with, which means the weapon, armor and crafting mods. The Java mods listing holds everything we left out.
