Minecraft quality of life mods fix small daily annoyances, and the twelve here are grouped by the annoyance each one removes. Mouse Tweaks speeds up moving stacks, AppleSkin shows hunger values the game hides, and Xaero's Minimap adds waypoints so you can find your way back. Five of the twelve have no server component at all, and the rest gain features when they are also on a server. Everything we left out sits in our Java mod listing.

How we picked these quality of life mods

We started from the 214 Java utility mods in our catalogue, 204 of which carry a Modrinth download count (read 9 October 2026). We kept the 12 most downloaded that are small everyday helpers for inventory, tooltips, maps and controls. We skipped libraries and config APIs such as YetAnotherConfigLib and owo-lib, performance and rendering mods, and larger content mods. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score. For lists sorted by popularity or by side instead, see our must-have mods and client-side mods pages.

Inventory and item handling

Mouse Tweaks

Mouse Tweaks

@YaLTeR · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.16.5 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this if you spend your time shuffling stacks between chests and your inventory. Its page describes extra left and right mouse button dragging, plus moving items with the scroll wheel, each switchable in a config file. It says it is purely client-side with no server component, so nothing needs installing on a server. The limit is loaders: our data lists Fabric, Forge and NeoForge releases and no Quilt release. The repository carries a BSD-3-Clause licence file.

Inventory Profiles Next

Inventory Profiles Next

@blackd · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.14.1 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Choose this for sorting, locked slots and one-click moves of matching items into a chest. Its page says it is pure client-side, so it works on any server. The trade-off is the dependency stack: current Fabric files need Fabric API, Fabric Language Kotlin and libIPN, and Forge and NeoForge files need libIPN. Its page also says it is not a drop-in replacement for Inventory Tweaks, so players coming from that mod must relearn their shortcuts, and that Quilt problems not seen on Fabric get low priority.

Just Enough Items (JEI)

Just Enough Items (JEI)

@mezz · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.8.9 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Choose this to look up any recipe or use of an item by hovering it and pressing R or U, or by searching the item list. The trade-off is the server: its page says that from 1.21.2 recipes are stored on the server, so JEI and the loader belong there too, while on 1.21.1 and lower it can run client-only with some features, such as the move-items buttons, switched off. The newest files in our data are tagged beta and need MezzConfig. For rival recipe viewers, see JEI vs REI vs EMI.

Tooltips and information on screen

AppleSkin

AppleSkin

@squeek502 · Java Mod

JavaFabric, NeoForgev 1.12.2 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this if hunger mechanics confuse you. It adds food values to tooltips, shows saturation and exhaustion on the HUD, and previews the hunger and health a held food would restore. Its page calls it mostly client-side, but it must also be on the server for saturation and exhaustion to be accurate, and it points to plugins for vanilla servers. Forge files end at 1.20.4 and Quilt files at 1.20.1, both marked stopped in our data, while Fabric and NeoForge continue. The repository is Unlicense.

Jade

Jade

@Snownee · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.16.4 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this for an on-screen readout of whatever block or mob your crosshair is on. Its page says it can be installed on the client alone, but features such as item storage, brewing stand fuel and bees in a beehive need Jade on the server too. It lists default keys for toggling the overlay and, with JEI, showing recipes. The limits are licensing and loaders: the repository carries a Creative Commons non-commercial share-alike licence, and Forge files end at 1.20.4.

Shulker Box Tooltip

Shulker Box Tooltip

@MisterPeModder · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.16.5 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this to read a shulker box's contents without placing it. Hovering and pressing shift gives a compact preview, and alt plus shift shows every stack in its slot. Its page adds that chests, furnaces and barrels taken in creative mode preview too. A server install is optional and adds extras such as ender chest preview. On Fabric it needs Fabric API, with Mod Menu recommended for settings, and Forge files end at 1.21.11 while NeoForge continues.

Enchantment Descriptions

Enchantment Descriptions

@Darkhax · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.20.1 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this if you keep forgetting what an enchantment does. Its page calls it a light weight client-side mod that adds descriptions to enchanted book tooltips, covering all vanilla enchantments in over 13 languages and most modded ones. The limit is dependencies, which change with the file: the newest Fabric and NeoForge files need Prickle, older ones need Bookshelf, and Fabric also needs Fabric API. Its README says a vanilla bug can push long tooltips off the screen on Fabric and suggests ToolTipFix.

BetterF3

BetterF3

@TreyRuffy · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.16.5 to 1.21.4

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this if the F3 screen is hard to read. It replaces the debug HUD with a layout whose colours, positions and lines you can change, with opening and closing animations. It needs the client and has no server support. Forge files stopped at 1.21.1 in November 2024, so Forge players are stuck on an older release, while Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt continue. The newest Fabric file lists Cloth Config API and Fabric API as required.

Maps and navigation

Xaero's Minimap

Xaero's Minimap

@thexaero · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.16.5 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this for a corner minimap with waypoints and an automatic cave mode. Its page says it is mostly client-sided, with a server install optional for extras such as world identification, and that a fair-play variant exists for following multiplayer server rules. The trade-offs: Modrinth lists an all-rights-reserved licence and we found no source repository, and the creator warns against using XaeroPlus with it. Our guide to Xaero's Minimap and World Map covers setup.

Xaero's World Map

Xaero's World Map

@thexaero · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.12.2 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this beside the minimap if you want a full-screen map that fills itself in as you explore. Opened with M, it works in singleplayer, multiplayer and Realms, and its page says it is a separate mod to keep the minimap as light-weight as possible. The page also says the mod is still in development, that changing resource packs regenerates the whole map, and that singleplayer worlds should be optimized first because unoptimized saves take much longer to map.

Controls and camera

Controlling

Controlling

@jaredlll08 · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.12.2 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this when the controls menu has grown too long to scan. It adds a search bar to the key bindings screen, a button that shows only conflicting bindings, and a way to see which keys are still free. It does that and nothing else. Current files need Searchables, and Fabric files also need Fabric API. Forge files end at 1.21.11 while Fabric and NeoForge continue. The repository carries an MIT licence file.

Zoomify

Zoomify

@isxander · Java Mod

JavaFabricv 1.18 to 26.3

Checked Source and install notes

Pick this for a configurable zoom key. Its page lists scroll-wheel zoom, 14 transition styles, optional spyglass integration and reduced mouse sensitivity while zoomed. It warns that a vanilla keybind can override the default C key, so check the controls screen. The cost is dependencies: the newest files list YetAnotherConfigLib, Fabric Language Kotlin and Fabric API as required, NeoForge files only start at 26.1, and Quilt files stopped at 1.20.5.

Client-side or server-side, and how to choose

Zoomify, Mouse Tweaks, Inventory Profiles Next, Controlling and BetterF3 have no server component, so they suit servers you do not run. AppleSkin, Jade and JEI gain accuracy or features when the server has them too, which matters if you host. For the difference in plain terms, read how client-side and server-side mods differ, and for placing files see installing mods on Java Edition. Check the loader column in the table first, since a stopped loader decides more than any feature. Everything else we list is in the Java mod listing.
