Everyday Utility Mods for Minecraft Java Edition

Twelve everyday utility mods for Java Edition, grouped by what they do, with each one's licence, side and main limit taken from its Modrinth data.

The must have Minecraft mods most players add first are a recipe viewer, a map, a block-info tooltip and a few inventory helpers. This page lists 12 of them from the Java mods we list. Just Enough Items is the most downloaded recipe viewer here, Xaero's Minimap is the most downloaded map, and Jade is the one to pick if you want to know what block or mob you are looking at. All 12 are Java Edition only.

How we picked these mods

We chose by hand from 210 pages in our Java utility category. 202 of them carry Modrinth download counts and update dates, read on 5 October 2026; the other 8 come from another source and have no count. We left out performance mods, libraries and anything a player never installs on its own. We did not benchmark or play-test any of these, downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score. The picks are grouped by job, not ranked.

Each mod runs only on the loader it was made for. If you are new to that, read how to install mods on Java Edition first.

Recipe viewers

Pick one recipe viewer, not two. Both below show how an item is made and what it is used for, and our JEI vs REI vs EMI comparison covers the third option.

Just Enough Items (JEI)

Just Enough Items (JEI)

@mezz · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.8.9 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Pick JEI if you want recipe and item lookup and nothing else. Its README says it does just items and recipes, with a focus on stability, performance and ease of use, and those are the project's own words. Search covers mod names, tooltips and creative tabs. The trade-off is the server: its FAQ says that since 1.21.2 recipes are stored on the server, so JEI and the loader must be installed there too to sync recipes. The newest Fabric and NeoForge releases also require MezzConfig, which has no page here.

EMI

EMI

@Emi · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.18.2 to 1.21.1

Checked Source and install notes

Pick EMI if you craft chains of items and want help with the maths. Its page describes a recipe tree that breaks a complex craft into base ingredients, a craftable mode, and favourites that can be crafted with a key press. It says it needs no dependencies beyond the standard Fabric or Quilt API, and that installing JEI alongside it shares recipes while hiding JEI. The trade-off is age: its last Modrinth update is 13 May 2026, earlier than every other pick here except none of the maps, so check the card against your Minecraft release before you commit.

Maps and navigation

Xaero's Minimap

Xaero's Minimap

@thexaero · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.16.5 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Pick Xaero's Minimap for a corner map with waypoints you can see in the world as well as on the map. Its page lists a square or circular minimap, an automatic cave mode, entity dots and a locked-north option. It comes in a full and a fair-play form, the latter designed for fair PVP. Newest Fabric releases need Fabric API; Forge and NeoForge need nothing. The trade-offs: the licence is all rights reserved with no source repository, and the creator warns against using XaeroPlus with it. Our Xaero's guide covers setup.

Xaero's World Map

Xaero's World Map

@thexaero · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.12.2 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick the World Map as the companion to the minimap: it adds a self-writing fullscreen map opened with M, and it works in singleplayer, multiplayer and on Realms. Its page says the minimap shows chunks the world map has already drawn, and the two share waypoints. It is sold as a separate mod to keep the minimap light. The trade-off is that the creator calls it still in development, and says mapping an unoptimized singleplayer world takes far longer, so optimize the world after each Minecraft update.

Tooltips for blocks, mobs and items

Jade

Jade

@Snownee · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.16.4 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Pick Jade for an on-screen readout of whatever you are looking at. It is the Hwyla and Waila successor for modern Minecraft, according to its page. It runs client-only, but item storage, brewing stand fuel and bees in a beehive need Jade on the server as well. Two trade-offs: Fabric releases require Fabric API, and the licence is CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, which is non-commercial, so check it before you put Jade in a modpack you sell or monetise.

AppleSkin

AppleSkin

@squeek502 · Java Mod

JavaFabric, NeoForgev 1.12.2 to 1.21.11

Checked Source and install notes

Pick AppleSkin if you want hunger made visible. It adds food values to tooltips, shows saturation and exhaustion on the HUD, and previews how much hunger or health the food in your hand restores. Its page says it changes no mechanics. It is released under the Unlicense. Two limits: accurate saturation values need it on the server too, and its Forge and Quilt releases stopped in 2023 (September and June), so only Fabric and NeoForge are current.

Shulker Box Tooltip

Shulker Box Tooltip

@MisterPeModder · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.16.5 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick Shulker Box Tooltip if you stop to open shulker boxes just to find one item. Hold Shift over a box in your inventory for a compact preview, or Alt and Shift for a full one with each stack in its slot. Its page says it also previews chests, furnaces and barrels, and many modded containers. The server side is optional, but ender chest preview needs it. On Fabric you also need Fabric API, and the newest Forge release is from 16 March 2026, while Fabric and NeoForge have newer ones.

Inventory helpers

Mouse Tweaks

Mouse Tweaks

@YaLTeR · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForgev 1.16.5 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick Mouse Tweaks if your complaint is slow item shuffling. It replaces the right-button drag with a version that places items repeatedly, adds left-button drags that pick up or shift-click same-type items, and lets the scroll wheel move items between inventories. The trade-off is in its own wording: it is purely client-side, and Modrinth lists the server as unsupported. It also changes how dragging behaves, so expect your muscle memory to shift. The newest releases need no dependencies.

Inventory Profiles Next

Inventory Profiles Next

@blackd · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.14.1 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick Inventory Profiles Next for sorting. Its page lists one-click sorting, moving the items you already have into a chest, locked slots that sorting ignores, and gear sets. It is client-only, so it works on servers where you cannot install anything. The cost is dependencies: the newest Fabric release needs Fabric Language Kotlin, Fabric API and libIPN, and Forge and NeoForge need libIPN. Its page also says it is not a drop-in replacement for Inventory Tweaks, and that Quilt problems not seen on Fabric get low priority.

Small interface fixes

Mod Menu

Mod Menu

@Terraformers · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Quiltv 1.14.4 to 26.2

Checked Source and install notes

Pick Mod Menu if you run Fabric or Quilt and want a screen listing every installed mod, with a shortcut to each mod's settings when that mod supports it. Several picks above list it as optional for exactly that reason, including Zoomify and Shulker Box Tooltip. Its page says it covers Fabric and Quilt only, so Forge and NeoForge players cannot use it. Its newest release needs Fabric API and one more library that has no page on our site.

Zoomify

Zoomify

@isxander · Java Mod

JavaFabricv 1.18 to 26.3

Checked Source and install notes

Pick Zoomify for a zoom key you can tune. Its page lists scroll zoom, 14 transitions, a spyglass-only mode, relative mouse sensitivity and a secondary zoom for video makers. Press C by default, and check the controls menu if the key turns red. The trade-off is that it is Fabric-only in practice: its Quilt releases stopped in April 2024, and the newest Fabric release requires YetAnotherConfigLib, Fabric Language Kotlin and Fabric API.

BetterF3

BetterF3

@TreyRuffy · Java Mod

JavaFabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quiltv 1.16.5 to 1.21.4

Checked Source and install notes

Pick BetterF3 if the F3 debug screen is hard to read. It replaces it with a HUD whose lines are modules you can recolour, move, delete or space out, with opening and closing animations. The newest Fabric and NeoForge releases require Cloth Config API, and Fabric also needs Fabric API; pressing F3 and M opens the options. The trade-off is that its Forge releases stopped on 4 November 2024, so Forge players are on an old release.

Performance mods and where to find them

Frame-rate and loading-time mods are left out on purpose. Our roundup of the most downloaded optimization mods covers them, and the performance mods listing has the rest.

How to choose between them

Start with your loader. Mod Menu and Zoomify are effectively Fabric-only, while AppleSkin and BetterF3 have stopped Forge releases, so Forge players have fewer current options. Next, check the server: Mouse Tweaks, Inventory Profiles Next, Mod Menu, Zoomify and BetterF3 are client-only, while JEI, Jade and AppleSkin gain features when also installed on the server, as our client-side vs server-side explainer describes. Everything else we left out is on the full Java mods listing.
