These twelve Java Edition mods are the most downloaded on Modrinth in their use, chosen from the 454 pages in our Java mod listing. Sodium is the pick for rendering, Xaero's Minimap for finding your way, and Litematica for building from schematics. Each entry names its loaders and one limit, because the right pick often depends on which loader you run.
How we picked these mods
We started from 454 Java mod pages in our catalogue. Of these, 426 have a Modrinth download count, read on 6 October 2026. We grouped the mods by what they do and took the most downloaded one in each use, leaving out libraries and APIs such as Fabric API, which players install only because another mod asks for it. We did not benchmark or play-test any of them. Downloads favour older projects, and a count is not a score.

Mods that make the game run and look better
Sodium
Sodium
@CaffeineMC · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Pick Sodium if frame rate and micro-stutter are your problem. It replaces the rendering engine and is required on the client only, since servers are unsupported. Its own page promises wide compatibility with other mods. The trade-offs: the newest releases carry an alpha tag, the licence is PolyForm Shield rather than an open-source one, and its page supports only desktop graphics cards with OpenGL 4.5 drivers. Quilt releases stop at 1.20.6.
Iris Shaders
Iris Shaders
@coderbot · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Iris loads shader packs, and its page says it is meant to be compatible with existing OptiFine shader packs. Its newest release on every loader requires Sodium, so you install two mods, not one. Quilt releases end earlier than Fabric and NeoForge. It is licensed LGPL-3.0, with a dependency notice about an AGPL library that its repository says may affect redistribution. Our shader roundup covers the packs themselves.
Distant Horizons
Distant Horizons
@jeseibel · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Distant Horizons is for players who want terrain far past the normal render distance. Its page quotes 256 or more chunks at a low performance cost, a claim we did not check. It works on the client alone, and a server with the mod can send distant terrain to connected players. The limit is shaders: its FAQ says they work only with packs built with Distant Horizons in mind. Our Distant Horizons guide covers setup.
Mods that help you find things and get around
Xaero's Minimap
Xaero's Minimap
@thexaero · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Xaero's Minimap is for explorers who want a corner map with waypoints that keeps a vanilla look. It needs the client; the server side is optional and adds features such as world identification. Its page lists a full edition and a fair-play edition, the latter designed for fair PVP. The trade-off is licensing: it is all rights reserved and links no source code. Setup is in our Xaero's guide.
Jade
Jade
@Snownee · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Jade shows information about what you are looking at, and suits newcomers who keep asking what something is. Its page says it can run client-side only, but features like item storage contents and brewing stand fuel need it on the server too. The newest Fabric release requires Fabric API. Its licence is CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, which forbids commercial use.
Just Enough Items (JEI)
Just Enough Items (JEI)
@mezz · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
JEI is the pick for viewing items and recipes and searching through them. Its limit is a sync rule: from Minecraft 1.21.2 recipes live on the server, so JEI and the loader must be installed there too. The Fabric and NeoForge releases also need MezzConfig, a library we have no page for. JEI vs REI vs EMI compares the alternatives.
Mods for building, storage and multiplayer
Litematica
Litematica
@masa · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Litematica projects a schematic into the world as a guide, so it suits creative builders who copy large designs. It is client-only and requires MaLiLib. Only Fabric releases are current; its Forge, Rift, LiteLoader and Ornithe releases are stopped. Its page warns that schematic rendering does not work properly with shaders on 1.21.3 and later, and that Easy Place can get you banned on some servers. See the Litematica guide.
Traveler's Backpack
Traveler's Backpack
@Tiviacz1337 · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Traveler's Backpack adds backpacks in five tiers, from Leather to Netherite, with over 45 designs according to its page. Choose it for portable storage that can also be placed as a block. It is required on both the client and the server. NeoForge needs no dependency, while the newest Fabric release requires Fabric API and Forge Config API Port.
Simple Voice Chat
Simple Voice Chat
@henkelmax · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Simple Voice Chat gives you proximity voice with push to talk, group chats and whispering, so it suits friends on a shared server. The catch is server setup: its page says UDP port 24454 must be open by default, or voice will not connect. It also notes that the chat is encrypted but offers no security guarantee. The licence is all rights reserved. Our connection fix covers the common failure.
Mods that add new content
Create
Create
@simibubi · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Create is for players who want animated components set up as contraptions in many possible arrangements. It must be on the server. Its own page lists Forge and NeoForge only and points to a separate port for Fabric. The newest NeoForge release stops at 1.21.1 and was updated in April 2026, so check your Minecraft release first. Its page advises installing JEI to see all recipes.
Farmer's Delight
Farmer's Delight
@vectorwing · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Farmer's Delight expands farming and cooking with meals, better soil and cooking tools, and suits survival players who want a gentler pace than machines. It is MIT-licensed and needed on both client and server. Releases cover NeoForge and Forge only, and its page says it is updated for 1.18.2 and 1.19 onward, with other releases discontinued.
Cobblemon
Cobblemon
@BlazingBRO · Java Mod
Checked Source and install notes
Cobblemon adds capturing, battling and trading Pokémon, with over 800 species according to its page, and is the pick for a monster-collecting world with friends. NeoForge needs Kotlin for Forge and Fabric needs Fabric API. Forge releases stopped in May 2024. Its own page says the mod is still in development and that it is not affiliated with Pokémon or Minecraft. The licence is MPL-2.0.
How to choose between them
Start with your loader, since Litematica is Fabric only while Create and Farmer's Delight skip Fabric. Then check where each mod must be installed. Sodium, Iris, Litematica and Xaero's Minimap work from the client, but Create, Traveler's Backpack, Farmer's Delight and Cobblemon need to be on the server too.
